How Tipping Works

A tip (or gratuity) is an extra payment made to service workers on top of the base bill. The tip percentage varies by country, service type, and quality of service. This calculator helps you quickly determine the right amount and split it evenly among your group.

Standard Tip Percentages by Country

Country/RegionTypical TipNotes
United States15–20%Expected at restaurants; 20%+ for excellent service
Canada15–20%Similar customs to the US
United Kingdom10–15%Optional but appreciated; some add service charge
Europe (most)5–10%Often included in service charge; round up is common
JapanNot expectedTipping can be considered rude
AustraliaNot expectedOptional; 10% for exceptional service
Brazil10%Often included as "gorjeta" on the bill

When to Tip More or Less

  • Excellent service: Consider 20–25% to recognize outstanding effort
  • Poor service: 10% minimum is still customary; speak to management for serious issues
  • Large groups: Many restaurants add 18% gratuity automatically for parties of 6+
  • Buffets: 10% is typically sufficient since you serve yourself
  • Takeout: No tip expected, but $2–3 for large or complicated orders is kind

How Bill Splitting Works

When splitting a bill, add the tip to the total first, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does this automatically: Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Split Count. This ensures everyone pays their fair share of both the meal and the tip.
